March is WORKSHOP month!

Pilates Mat

Pilates is a system of controlled exercises that engage the mind and condition the total body. The blend of strength and flexibility training improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up. Pilates takes a balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked and the body moves as an efficient, holistic system in sport and daily activity. Reformer, Yoga, Mindful Meditation. All designed to allow you to explore more ways for you to challenge your health and wellness needs. 


There is probably no piece of Pilates equipment more famous than the reformer. And for good reason! The reformer makes a dramatic impression when you first see one, and an even more dramatic change in the body when you use it.  

One of the best things about the reformer is its versatility. Exercises can be done lying down, sitting, standing, pulling the straps, pushing the footbar, perched on the footbar, perched on the shoulder blocks, with additional equipment, upside down, sideways and all kinds of variations thereof. In other words, the reformer can train many parts and dynamics of the body in so many different ways with just one relatively sleek piece of equipment.

All kinds of exercises are done on the reformer to promote length, strength, flexibility, and balance. This workshop will familiarize you with the reformer, the principle exercises on the reformer, cues that will lead a class, and important safety rules to get the most of a reformer workout or reformer class.


New to yoga, or just want to brush up on the basics? Check out our course designed to introduce yoga for new students, or for anyone who would like to brush-up on the basics. In the course, we will talk a bit about yoga as a philosophy and practice, teach many of the basic postures (asanas), and focus on breathing techniques and sequences in vinyasa yoga. During the workshop we will focus on proper alignment within postures and how that feels in your own body. 

After completing this, you'll feel confident walking into any yoga class. 

Mindful Meditation

Dr. Kat Lewis Ph.D. presents the latest scientific research on mindfulness and how the brain and the body can be transformed through mental practices derived from the world's great contemplative traditions. 

Adoption of mindfulness programs has been rapid in schools, the prison system, Capitol Hill, business, military and even professional sports.

She counsels private clients, leads workshops and corporate lunch & learns teaching meditation and lecturing on a variety of topics including the neuroscience of mindfulness, adrenal fatigue, the gut brain connection, weight control, and how to maximize your health with diet and lifestyle choices.

It's February ....and I'm a year older. Thank goodness for you all, keeping me on my game and in shape! It's the energy, dedication and fun that you all bring, that lights up my inner spark and stimulates my A game each and every day. Thank you! 

But, here's what else I'm doing to hopefully prevent, maintain, and protect all the wonderful things our bodies do for us...

Acupuncture: Just recently started this and am loving it. Inquire directly if you'd like a referral to where I'm going. I really like him. 

Massage: When you teach as much as I do, or ladies- work out as much as you do!! - we need body work. If you don't have one already, make it a point to find one that you like, trust and feel confident that they will reset your facia after all the work you do. Again, let me know if you need a referral. 

Collagen: I'm just starting this but was recommended Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate, it's a powder that mixes into cold or hot liquids...I add it to my coffee and don't taste a thing. 

Vitamins: I take a food cultured womens 40+ one a day. 

Probiotic: I like the generic from Whole Foods.

Water: well, I haven't been as good about this as I should...it's SO COLD!!!..but I do drink 2 full glasses each morning before you see me at the studio. 

some kind of Purified/Liquified Something: I am a chocoholic! So, instead of indulging on ice cream daily, when I find myself with some time in Walnut Creek, I hit Pressed Juicery and get the Chocolate Almond Milk. And then I usually buy a Greens 2 and a Citrus 1. Greens 2 is a daily dose of greens with a lightly sweetened flavor from apples. Citrus 1 is a super hydrating blend of coconut water, cucumber, pineapple that not only quenches but aids in digestion. Plus both of these hit my sweet tooth too! 

Mantra Bands: my recent discovery. I stumbled upon these at Nordstrom and had to have one. I also bought one for a dear friend for her birthday. She was thrilled. I've loved mine so much and was reminded by her when I got the pleasure of seeing her recently how much hers meant as well, that I decide to sell them too. So, now you can get one at Star! I currently own 4!! Wear your own personal mantra, your own personal message, remind yourself daily your own affirmations and goals. Or gift one to your special person.

I am so lucky that I get to do this every day!

New year, new stuff...+ STAR student!

Wow, 2017. Seems like it was just 2016. :)

I'm super excited about all the familiar and NEW faces at Star Pilates and Fitness as we start this exciting new year. And I'm excited about what's to come at Star. 

First...is FIRST FRIDAYS! Come and work your week off with an energizing friday night group fitness class and then settle into your well deserved weekend with happy hour after. Classes will rotate as instructors are available, but you can expect an intense workout as well as our signature fun style. Music will be bumping, lights will be low, and of course you'll get to chill with your comrades and enjoy a beverage after.

This months STAR student is my lovely client and friend, Jacquie Childers. Jacquie and I met back when I was teaching at a studio in Lafayette, before I owned Star. It took some time to get her to come on over, and now I'm lucky to see her 3-4 times a week. She really lights up her tuesdays and thursdays and DOUBLES DOWN with a spin/barre combo- way to kick it into high gear Jacquie! Thankfully I also get to see her bright smile on my weekends too. 

Not only is Jacquie a dedicated fitness pal, but she's also a devoted mother and wife, a pediatric nurse, and a fierce fashionista..check her out!

Couple reminders STARS...

Star Pilates and Fitness is a local and owner operated business. We pride ourselves on offering customized group fitness classes with small class sizes to give individualized attention to each participant. To enhance your experience to it's highest level, we appreciate you following our guidelines:

*Arrive 5 minutes early to your class. While we do have some admin support staff, it is not for every class. Instructors often sign their own classes in. This means if you arrive 5 minutes past the start time, it is possible the door will be locked and you'll miss the party. 

*Bring a re-fillable water bottle, we cold filter our own water.

*Bring indoor (or atleast CLEAN!) cross training shoes for spin and TRX classes. Or SPD spin shoes.

*We do not require grippy socks, but recommend them for barre and pilates. We also sell them should you need a pair. 

*Do yourself a favor, leave your phone in the car! 

*Wear moveable, breathable work out clothes.

*Don't worry about a towel- we've got them. We've also got yoga mats, props, and you can usually find chocolate at the front desk. 

*Smile often. 

Thank you for doing your best to work collaboratively on making STAR a wonderful place to get fit for ALL of us.

Weekend Warrior

Happy Weekend Stars! And a 3 day weekend at that! Hope to see you all at the studio. Full schedule all weekend, minus the 10 AM reformer class Saturday. Instructor vacation! 

I know I'm excited about the last LMYA soccer game of the season. Not that I haven't enjoyed every moment of classic bunch ball and good times! Which brings me to my Thursday post for all you weekend warriors, getting your workout in and balancing it with the never ending family (eh-em sports participation) time. Check out a tip to take YOUR fitness to the field. 

For those Stars that are choosing to not exercise their bodies this weekend, and maybe just exercising their livers....I've got a tip for you too....

Just before bed, and after those few too many cocktails or glasses of wine, take a tablespoon of pure unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar. Wash down with a glass of water and don't forget to brush your teeth and wash your face. Even better if you apply eye cream and a night serum. Apple Cider Vinegar neutralizes the sugar you over-consumed and can help your body find balance through the night, alleviating a hangover and allowing for a more restful night sleep. 



Shining Star

Star Pilates and Fitness presents....



Here at Star Pilates and Fitness, we all work hard. But there are times when it feels appropriate to point out when one of you is working particularly hard. Or maybe having a really good time doing it. Or maybe ROCKING a pair of bright patterned leggings. 

Don't worry, you'll all get your turn. But this time, this first Star Student goes to the fabulous Marcie Tuttle. Marcie found me through a mutual friend and has been a loyal client and friend ever since. She has brought countless others to experience Star and helped me to turn visits into regular clients. Marci has tried nearly everything that I've thrown at her, even wild and crazy leggings. And taken each with her beautiful long stride: mastered moves, postures, and how to wear those fun leggings! 

In the past few weeks, Marci has taken big efforts to keep up with her workouts. Even though an injury is preventing her from doing barre class as we most do, shoeless, she simply bought a new pair of trainers and is doing it all with shoes on! Way to stay with it Marci! 

I think one of my favorite things about Marci is her wonderful smile and what comes right behind it...compassion, empathy and pure goodness. 

Thank you Marci for being such an easy choice as our first STAR STUDENT. And thank you for being you, my wonderful client and friend.

Happy 2nd Birthday, Star

My dream had always been to devise the perfect fitness program for anyone, regardless of their fitness level. After moving to Moraga and having had experience teaching group fitness classes around the Bay Area, I concluded that working for other studios did not allow me to improvise and individualize, I realized the only way to have freedom as a teacher was to become a businesswoman and run my own studio.

I didn’t know what I was getting into but charged ahead, using savings to purchase a local studio whose owner was ready to retire. With a cosmetic face lift and enhanced offerings I was excited to embark on this new venture.

I officially re-opened in October 2014, and two months later was my little studio had multiple class offerings and they were filled with wonderful clients. My clients told me they felt comfortable and cared for, and beyond the workouts, their daily lives were improved through increased energy, greater stamina, and radiant confidence. I really felt I was fulfilling my passion of helping people achieve their fitness goals. 

Two years later, Star Pilates and Fitness is thriving. I didn’t really know where I was headed when I first bought this business. But I was – and still am – driven by a desire to teach my own students my own way, and see the results. For a teacher there is no greater gratification or reward.
